National Minimum Wage

29/03/2006
It has been announced that the National Minimum Wage (NMW) will increase again on 1 October 2006. Workers aged 22 and over will receive £5.35 per hour (current rate is £5.05). 18-21 years old will receive £4.45 (current rate is £4.25) and 16-17 year olds will receive £3.30 per hour (current rate is £3.00). The NMW rates are set according to recommendations made by the independent Low Pay Commission. The NMW is part of a Government strategy to provide workers with decent minimum standards and fairness in the workplace. Also the strategy aims to allow companies to compete on the quality of the goods and services that they provide rather than low prices arising from low rates of pay.
